In River of Grace: Creative Passages Through Difficult Times Bailey reveals in this personal and moving narrative how several major losses helped her rediscover creativity and faith. Filled with powerful insights on the presence and action of grace–in the Mass and the sacraments, nature and grief, and even through the life and works of Louisa May Alcott–River of Grace guides readers in strengthening their faith, discovering their own hidden gifts and restoring a joy in living during and after tough times.

Each chapter relates Bailey’s experiences of loss and growth and features original activities and personal rituals known as “Flow Lessons” that include everything from Joni Mitchell music videos and hot baths to imagery and uncooked spaghetti. These inspirational tools guide readers to reflect on their own experiences. Prayers and poetry are found throughout the book and a set of insightful reflection questions are placed at the end of each chapter.

Recently Bailey was interviewed on Relevant Radio about River of Grace: you can listen here.

Titled Louisa May Alcott: Illuminated by The Message, the book is part of a new series known as Literary Portals to Prayer where classic literature and Bible passages presented in a fresh contemporary language, meet to inspire meditation and prayer. Other classic authors in the series include Hans Christian Andersen, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell, Herman Melville and William Shakespeare.

Bailey’s passion for and expertise on the life and works of Louisa May Alcott made her the ideal person to compile this Literary Portal to Prayer. Louisa May Alcott: Illuminated by The Message will enrich your faith while revealing a deeply spiritual side of the beloved author. Passages from Alcott’s works referenced in River of Grace appear in this volume.

Susan Bailey was a full member of the Commission for Women for ten years, where she served as chair and secretary; she continues as an associate member, maintaining the Commission’s website. She wrote a monthly column for The Catholic Free Press for the Commission, “Concerning Women,” and continues to write for the diocesan newspaper in her monthly “Be as One column” along with feature stories.
