Day-long retreat to be offered by Sr. Joyce Rupp

We are pleased to offer to you a special day with Sr. Joyce Rupp on Saturday, September 29, 2012 from 9am to 3pm at St. Anne’s Parish (in the parish hall), 130 Boston Turnpike (Route 9 eastbound), Shrewsbury.

As some of you may recall, at our Gather Us In 2007 conference we spent an hour listening to the inspirational words of Joyce Rupp. She speaks as she writes with calmness and understanding of the human condition making that all-important connection between lives as we live them and the presence of God in all the moments of those lives.

The topic for the day will be “The Gift of Self-Compassion.”

Contrary to common belief, self-compassion is not an indulgent, self-centered orientation. Rather, self-compassion is essential for a healthyspiritual life. Self-compassion implies that we take time to renew our spirit, that we offer forgiveness and forego harsh judgments about our imperfections. This approach leads us to be kinder to others, as well. As the co-director of The Institute of Compassionate Presence, Joyce Rupp teaches in the program both regionally and nationally. She offers the expertise of her study and extensive teaching on the topic of compassion. This retreat will include insights from her own lived experience and from the Gospels, along with the published works of Kristin Neff (Self –Compassion), Brene Brown (The Gifts of Imperfection), Paul Gilbert (The Compassionate Mind) and Jack Kornfield (The Wise Heart).

A quote from author Kristin Neff sums up the purpose of this retreat: “Self-kindness, by definition, means that we stop the constant self-judgment and disparaging internal commentary that most of us have come to see as normal, …It also involves actively comforting ourselves, responding just as we would to a dear friend in need.”

Birth of the retreat

The idea for this retreat was born from the experiences of Commission members who had the privilege of hearing Sr. Joyce speak on compassion a few years ago on Cape Cod. The event was a real blessing and we’d like to share with you what we experienced.

A day with Sr. Joyce

Our day was structured around various approaches. Sr. Joyce spoke of the theoretical and experiential dynamics of compassion. She spoke of the types of compassion and of the ways to effect our own personal transformation in order to free ourselves to reach out to others in a compassionate way. Joyce’s more formal presentations were beautifully integrated with meditations encouraged by music as well as meditations led by Joyce herself. Most powerful among those was one in which we each called to mind four of our ancestors (family or friends) to be present to us. As we approached the conclusion of the day, we paired with someone near us and blessed each other as Joyce led us in the special prayer-truly an emotional and spiritual experience.

Books on compassion

Sr. Joyce listed several books on the topic of compassion. The one most highly recommended was Compassion: Listening to the Cries of the World by Christine Feldman. Sara Thomsen’s CDs By Breath and I Arise were also used in Sr. Joyce’s presentation.

Sr. Joyce has followed one of her dreams. In response to the pain she has encountered in many lives she and Sr. Margaret Stratman have begun the Institute of Compassionate Presence located in Omaha, Nebraska. They are responding to the gifts of their own personalities, their years of study and their experiences with others as they reach out to those in need and to those working with people needing compassion. Those benefitting from the programs presented are healthcare professionals, teachers, counselors, hospice workers, pastoral ministers -in short, anyone wishing to grow in compassion for themselves and others.

Come spend a day with Sr. Joyce

Having spent a day in Joyce Rupp’s presence with the entire focus being compassion, it was easy to to imagine bringing her here and letting the women of our diocese benefit from her prayerful teaching.

Now we are pleased to announce that Sr. Joyce will be coming to our diocese on September 29, 2012 from 9am to 3pm at  St. Anne’s Parish Hall in Shrewsbury. Be sure and mark it on your calendar, it’s a day you won’t want to miss! Registration will open in May – be sure and visit our website in May for details on how to register. The cost will be $40 per person (lunch is not included but coffee and pastries will be offered in the morning).

I would very much like to sign up for the retreat, but I understand it is sold out. Is there a waiting list I could go on. Is there another retreat with Joyce Rupp opened this year?
